Abstract

Background and Aim: Pregnancy and childbirth are significant events in women's lives, accompanied by physical and emotional changes. Doubts, fears, and uncertainties often arise, particularly related to the lack of knowledge about labor signs. Health promotion during prenatal care aims to empower pregnant women to recognize these signs and identify the right moment to seek hospital assistance, promoting maternal-fetal health and safe delivery. This scoping review aimed to map evidence on pregnant women's knowledge regarding labor signs. Methods: A scoping review based on Joanna Briggs Institute methodology (2020) was conducted. The search was performed using EBSCOhost databases and was limited to studies published between 2010 and 2023. Three independent reviewers evaluated and synthesized the selected studies. Results: Five studies were analyzed. The results were grouped into two main categories: Pregnant Women with Knowledge of Labor Signs, which addressed physical signs of labor onset, such as physiological changes and symptoms associated with the labor process; and Pregnant Women Without Knowledge, which included themes related to lack of information, difficulty recognizing signs, and uncertainty about when to seek hospital care. Conclusions: Most pregnant women demonstrated low knowledge of labor signs and had difficulty identifying the right moment to seek hospital assistance. A lack of adequate prenatal guidance was also observed. Prenatal health education is essential to promote pregnant women's empowerment and autonomy.
